Marcapáginas - Maider López
Marcapáginas
HPC residency with Maider López
“There is a fetishism attached to objects in this kind of amateur collection.
(...)The object forms a link between the collector and its origins”. Video Green by Chris Kraus
The project Marcapáginas (Bookmark), by the artist Maider López for consonni’s HPC program, is a proposal that sets out from the book Video Green by Chris Kraus, whose Spanish language edition will be published by consonni as part of the Paper collection of cultural critiques. Starting from the idea of amateur collecting and object fetishism, Lopéz’s proposal consists in collecting memories that we use as bookmarks on a quotidian basis. These evocations of the personal everyday occurrences of whoever wishes to take part in this amateur collection will be included in each printed copy of Kraus’s book. Later, anyone who goes to a bookshop or library will take away a book that has been printed in series, but that contains a unique particularity: someone’s lived experience.
In this way, a connection, a tie, is created between the person who reads the book and finds the unexpected object and the person who experienced that moment. A memory of another person that you take up and marks your reading. With the passing of time, on rereading the book someone might even believe – by means of that record found in the book – that she remembers the day she went to a certain museum, compiled that shopping list or left that note, although on that occasion it is someone else’s memory.
Marcapaginas is a project of the artist Maider López for the programme of artistic residences HPC in the independent cultural space consonni. This project is made in relation to Chris Kraus´s Video Green book which has been translated to Spanish by Cecilia Pavón and published by consonni ediciones inside the collection of critical culture Paper.

She has carried out projects in public spaces such as: Ataskoa, 2005; Polder Cup (Skor and Witte de With, Netherlands); Eclats (Centre Pompidou-Metz), 2010; Mountain (Lower Austria Contemporary), 2013. She has had her work displayed in individual exhibitions such as: 1645 Tizas (Pieces of chalk), Matadero Madrid, 2016, and Displacement (Displacement), Koldo Mitxelena and MARCO museum in Vigo, 2015.
Video Green examines the explosion of late 1990s Los Angeles art driven by high-profile graduate programs. Probing the surface of art-critical buzzwords, Chris Kraus brilliantly chronicles how the City of Angels has suddenly become the epicenter of the international art world and a microcosm of the larger culture. Why is Los Angeles so completely divorced from other realities of the city? Shrewd, analytic and witty, Video Green is to the Los Angeles art world what Roland Barthes’ Mythologies were to the society of the spectacle: the live autopsy of a ghost city.
